Urbane Cyclist Lead

Worker's run co-op in the heart of Downtown Toronto.

Momentum gets a tune-up at Urbane Cyclist in the heart of downtown Toronto.

The Urbane Cyclist has been serving commuters and couriers in the Downtown core for the past 13 years, operating as a worker’s run co-operative. Before moving to Vancouver from Toronto, Urbane was one of a few shops I would frequent. Their selection is great, prices are reasonable, they can always squeeze you in if your tube is busted, but it was mainly the staff that would keep me coming back. It’s also an amazing central location in Toronto, with the AGO, OCAD, City Hall and the Much Music building being a few pedals away. You may have to take an alley or side-street to get to Urbane due to hoards of tweens clogging the corner of Queen and John, cheering on their latest idol. It’s a great place to people watch and pass the time while they fix your breaks.

Their back shop is a great place to bring your sick bike, or to get your bike in tip-top riding shape. While preparing for our BikeStyle Toronto party, I took my Dahon in for tome tender loving care. My bike had been traveling a fair bit. I had picked her up in NYC for BFF, bussed her to Toronto and rode around to see what was going on during the G20, went back to do my first Vancouver critical Mass, and scooted up and down the Pemberton Valley frequently. Needless to my Mu P8 needed a bit of a tune-up!

Urbane Cyclist worker Zef Kraiker was the mechanic for the job. Zef has his own business and merchandise available for sale at the shop called WIPT, or Wear It Proud Toronto. He is pictured wearing one of his favorite caps. Check out his blog for info on the brand, but the blog offers a tiny peak at the creative and dynamic individuals that make up Toronto’s fantastic bike community. (You can also go to Urbane Cyclist to be a part of it yourself.)

Zef fixed my derailleur, tuned my spokes, check and adjusted the breaks, greased the chain, checked the folding bike components to make sure they were holding up, gave my bike and wheels a clean up, and sent me on my way. Tune-ups vary in cost, but your average will be $50 CND. Think of it like check ups at the dentist; going in for cleanings will make it less likely you will get a cavity, and regular tune-ups will ensure your bike won’t break-down in the middle of the road. It’s totally worth it, and I can recommend Urbane for their friendly service, giant back shop, and amazing location.
