Players begin by choosing an avatar from among actual members of the Black Label Bike Club of Minneapolis, MN, or Chunk 666 of Portland, OR – known for their tall bikes, jousting and chopper bikes. The next step is to build a bike in The Garage, choosing frames, parts and accessories. Players can then “quick joust” Doyle, the Tall Bike Jousting Champion of the World (and the app’s creator), for practice, or they can go straight to tournaments set in a gritty Brooklyn cityscape, a neon Hong Kong, a Minneapolis winter and more.

With each tournament win, a player is granted access to body armor, better bike parts and lance attachments, such as the flaming lance or the stuffed bunny rabbit.

The pedaling motion – achieved by the rapid up and down motion of a player’s thumbs on the iPhone screen – is awkward at first, especially because players must simultaneously alter the phone’s planar orientation to aim their lance. After a handful of matches, though, players can be well on their way to the ultimate championship joust against the venerable Doyle.
