VANCOUVER, BC - The City of Vancouver is developing plans to make the Central Broadway area (see map) sustainable, inclusive, economically viable and interesting.
City council’s goals/ priorities for the area include: “homelessness and affordable housing; strong, safe and inclusive communities; environment and sustainability; and creative capital and a growing economy,” according to the city’s website.
Council asked the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition (VACC) for suggestions on how to “have 50 percent of all trips in this corridor be made by sustainable modes (walking, transit, cycling) by 2020,” according to the VACC’s July 27, 2010 meeting minutes. Currently, 3,000 cyclists ride through the area every day, compared to 16,000 cars carrying 19,000 people.
The VACC suggested the introduction of trees, bike sharing, covered bike parking, public washrooms, food vendors and outdoor cafés, along with the elimination of car lanes on Broadway, “since 16,000 cars per day is not much.”
Public consultations surrounding the development plans are set to continue into autumn. A report is scheduled to be released in the spring.
